Woodland management

South East Forestry is committed to the environment and to the health of the South East’s woodlands.

Too much competition for light leaves trees stunted, which means the better trees are unable to achieve their potential and the diversity of plant and animal life within the woodland is crowded out by volunteer saplings and invasive species.

South East Forestry’s expert team thins the woodland to allow the stronger trees better access to light and encourage new growth between them. Jon Davies, Dave Holmes and the team love to return a year or two later to find new wildlife where once there was just a tangled mass of trees and scrub.

Our approach is as diverse as the woodlands we work in, but our goal is always to deliver the maximum value to the landowner by finding the best end use for the timber we harvest while leaving the woods in better shape.

The environment also benefits from our work. While it’s true that trees sequester carbon, older, less vigorous trees are not as efficient at doing the job as healthy young saplings. By giving younger trees the sunlight they need to grow strongly, South East Forestry is helping lock up carbon.

We also aim to use as much harvested timber as possible in the construction, furniture or fencing markets, again locking in the carbon while creating jobs in the local rural economy.

Where possible the timber we harvest is put into the construction, furniture or fencing markets, locking in the carbon and creating jobs in the local rural economy. This adds value to a woodland product that might otherwise have ended up as biofuel.
